About the Artist:

John Fleissner (b. 1989, Milwaukee, WI) is a passionate printmaker and muralist dedicated to empowering working-class social movements through art. ✊ His experiences organizing within the labor movement deeply influence his work, as each new print or poster often reflects the spirit of a developing organizing campaign. As a committed educator, John teaches Printmaking in Milwaukee Public Schools, fostering in his students the understanding that art can effect change in the world. He actively organizes with the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association to champion worker and student rights.

About the Project:

During his residency, John plans to create an impressive series of large-scale woodcuts focusing on pivotal moments in labor history, particularly labor strikes from the 1930s, like the Toledo Autolite strike, Minneapolis Teamsters strike, and San Francisco General Strike. He will also explore working-class organizing in the South, including the South Tenants Farmers Union. In addition to the large prints, he will produce smaller linoleum cuts to create impactful posters that circulate globally—gracing picket lines, streets, and classroom walls. As a teacher and social organizer, John’s work connects printmaking with social justice and collective action.
