About the event

Designed to Belong: Modernism, Industry and Community 🌍🏗️

Belonging is not an accident – it is designed! Join us for a captivating panel discussion that delves into how architecture influences our sense of belonging, shaping not just our shelters, but the very fabric of everyday life.

Using Bata Village at East Tilbury as a focal point, we will explore how modernist ideals, industrial ambitions, and community planning created a unique lifestyle.

🗣️ Speakers:

  • Milan Balaban: A historian who positions Bata Village within the global narrative of Bata cities.
  • Gillian Darley OBE: Renowned architectural historian reflecting on British modernism’s significance.
  • Mick Pinion: From the Bata Heritage Centre, offering insights into East Tilbury’s development and legacy.
  • Ondřej Chybík: An architect discussing contemporary urban planning lessons.
  • John Tusa: Our chair and a distinguished arts administrator, guiding the conversation as we connect historical experiments to today’s discussions on development, identity, and place-making.

🎟️ Admission: £5 (+ Eventbrite Fee)
