From App to Map: A Practical Navigation Skills Day

Join us for an interactive navigation day designed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enhance their skills beyond mobile apps! 🌲✨ Experience the stunning landscapes of the Lake District while gaining real-world navigation expertise with supportive guidance.

What to Expect:

Congratulations on taking this step towards becoming a more confident adventurer! This event offers hands-on practice in a safe, nurturing environment.

Led by the experienced Abbie, our goal is to help you gain genuine confidence in using a map and compass.

Initial Skills Session:

We'll kick off the day with introductions and an overview of what to expect. Key topics covered will include:

• 📍 Orientating the map
• 📏 Understanding map scale and symbols
• 🗺️ Taking and interpreting grid references
• 🌄 Identifying essential map features and relating them to the landscape
• 🧭 A basic introduction to compass usage

On the Hill Navigation:

After mastering the basics, we'll embark on a practical route, applying our newfound skills. Throughout our walk, participants will:

• Use the compass for navigation
• Learn how to set bearings effectively
• Interpret contour lines for elevation and slope
• Recognize common map symbols like footpaths and streams

This day is structured for discussion, discovery, and enjoying the beautiful hills 🌳. You'll have the chance to lead short navigation “legs” to reinforce your learning with peers.

Route & Decision Making:

While we have a planned route, we remain flexible to adapt based on:

• 💪 Group energy levels
• 📚 Learning progress

Finish & Debrief:

We aim to return to the car park relaxed and enriched, where we’ll enjoy a warm drink together ☕. Bring a mug and your favorite beverage to share some tea or coffee while reflecting on your day of learning!
