Lilian Redstone Celebration Day: Discover Suffolk's Archives

Lilian Redstone Celebration Day: Discover Suffolk's Archives

About the event

Join us to honor Lilian Redstone MBE BA (1885โ€“1955), a pioneer in the field of archival work in Suffolk! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

In the early 1900s, she was one of the first women to turn history into a profession, working with medieval documents and manuscripts to research, transcribe, and share local histories. Thanks to her efforts, the first county record offices were established in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. ๐ŸŒŸ

Our archivist team will showcase some treasures from our collections, and during a panel discussion, they will share insights into their experiences and the significance of archival work today. We are thrilled to welcome Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Shepherd as a special guest, who will discuss her recent research on pioneering female archivists like Lilian. ๐ŸŽค

Throughout the day, enjoy behind-the-scenes tours and engage with colleagues from our local history networks to promote and explore broader heritage work in Suffolk and beyond. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ
