About the event
Join us as we delve into the foundational debates that shaped the United States! πΊπΈ In 2026, America celebrates its 250th anniversary, and we're marking this milestone by exploring the discussions among the founders, particularly between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Over eight weeks, we'll analyze primary sources and some scholarly perspectives to better understand their thoughts and fears regarding the government they were establishing.
What to Expect:
- Reading Load: 30β50 pages per week π
- Format: Small group discussions that thrive on participation β your presence at most sessions is encouraged!
- Preparation: Bring an annotated copy of the readings each week.
- Kick-off: Our first meeting will include an overview of the American Founding Era timeline, providing essential context for our discussions.
Readings for This Week:
- Locke, Second Treatise of Government (Ch. 2, 9, 19)
- Montesquieu, Spirit of the Laws (Book XI, Ch. 1β6)
Both works are in the public domain, so feel free to find them online or purchase physical copies! A handy packet has been prepared for easy download here.
