An influential alternative rap group from South Central Los Angeles, The Pharcyde emerged in the early 1990s with playful lyricism, jazz-influenced production, and an offbeat approach to hip-hop. The original lineup included Tre Hardson (“Slimkid3”), Derrick Stewart (“Fatlip”), Imani Wilcox, and Romye Robinson (“Bootie Brown”), who first connected on the L.A. underground club circuit.Their debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992) went gold and helped establish them as one of alternative hip-hop’s most distinctive acts. They followed with Labcabincalifornia and gained wider recognition touring with artists like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as appearing at Lollapalooza.Over the years the lineup has evolved, but The Pharcyde’s influence on alternative and jazz-inspired hip-hop remains significant, with Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde continuing to resonate with fans around the world.
