Embrace the odd with award-winning author Johanna Bell as she guides you on how to inject more strangeness into your writing. Life is full of inexplicable moments, so why do many writers fall back on clichés? Discover how to step outside of the conventional and create writing that surprises and delights.

Drawing inspiration from renowned authors like Olga Ravn, Max Porter, Victoria Chang, Miranda July, Maggie Nelson, and Ben Walter, this workshop will cover:

  • The essence of ‘weird’ writing and its significance.
  • Practical techniques for crafting novel and surprising content.
  • An introduction to a library of ‘weird writers’.
  • Opportunities to connect with fellow local writers. 🤝

About Johanna:
Until recently, Johanna resided in Garramilla (Darwin), where she founded a storytelling studio that elevated voices from Northern Australia. Now based in Nipaluna (Hobart), she is an accomplished writer of fiction, poetry, and children’s books, with numerous awards to her name, including a Tasmanian Literary Award for her novel Department of the Vanishing. She was honored with the Copyright Agency / University of Technology New Writer’s Fellowship in 2026 to work on her next book, exploring memory loss.
