A Conversation with Donna Gentle Spirit Barron at the BHS Castle
The Bayside Historical Society proudly presents an inspiring event featuring Donna Gentle Spirit Barron, a renowned family historian and genealogist for the Matinecock Tribal Nation. With five published books under her belt, Donna brings forth a wealth of knowledge about her family’s rich Native history.
The Matinecock were integral members of the Algonquin Nation, representing one of the thirteen original Native American tribes on Long Island. Donna has a vibrant history with The Castle, having conducted American Indian crafting workshops and author discussions, while also contributing invaluable research for BHS exhibits.
Notably, she played a key role in establishing the historic co-naming at Northern Boulevard and Marathon Parkway in Little Neck in 2015.
During this engaging session, Donna will be joined by Paul DiBenedetto, the BHS Vice President of Buildings. Together, they will delve into her family’s legacy spanning nine generations in Little Neck and uncover the history of the Matinecock settlements in Bayside and northeast Queens.
Join us for this unique opportunity to learn about the rich tapestry of Native American communities that once flourished here — and continue to thrive today!
💲 Admission: $10.00 for BHS members, $15.00 for non-members.
