📜 Abstract:
Explore Provincial Egypt as a lens for understanding social organization among the grassroots of ancient Egyptian society. Delve into the crucial role of local elites in mediating central power within their communities. While much focus has been on the nomarchs from the late Old Kingdom to the Middle Kingdom, lesser-known social strata—often lacking substantial textual or visual records—offer rich insights through their material culture. This lecture navigates the latest scholarship on social modeling and presents fresh findings from recent fieldwork at Zawyet Sultan, Middle Egypt, opening up future research avenues that illuminate bodies and identities in provincial contexts.
