About the event

The director explores the daily life and culture of Argentina’s gauchos—ranchers who have chosen to live on the wild pampas. This three-part series is as much a travelogue as it is a collection of impressions drawn from Argentine folk culture, particularly its music.

Argentine Journey I – The Gaucho and the Pampas – The first episode is a portrait of the gaucho, Argentina’s national symbol, who rides on horseback across the vast steppes where no trees grow to shield him from the sun’s rays.

Argentine Journey II – Zamba, Chacarera, and Chamamé – In the second part of the trilogy, the crew moves from the Pampas to the northern provinces and discovers three distinct styles of music and dance that evolved in the 19th century and have their roots in pre-colonial culture.

Argentine Journey III – Pacha Mama – Holy Earth – In the final part, we find ourselves in the Calchaquí Valleys on the ridges of the majestic Andes—in Argentina’s least developed region, with traditions and customs dating back to before Inca rule. The finale features a carnival dedicated to Pacha Mama—the goddess of the Earth.
