Archaeology Day at Pope's Tavern Museum

About the event

Join us for the fourth annual Archaeology Day at Pope's Tavern Museum! This exciting event offers a fantastic opportunity to dive into the world of archaeology at an active dig site. Everyone is invited to participate in sifting, excavating, and processing interesting artifacts! 🏺

Several supporting organizations will join us, including the Alabama Archaeological Society and TVA Cultural Resources. Activities will include:

  • Flintknapping with Van King: Discover the art of making projectile points, arrowheads, and tools from chert! 🔪
  • Plant Identification 101 with Summer McCreless: Learn to identify and respectfully harvest plants, exploring their historical uses in medicine and cuisine. 🌿
  • Blacksmith Demonstration with the Athens Forge, Alabama Forge Council: Watch skilled blacksmiths create metal tools right before your eyes! 🔨
  • Children’s Art Activity with Erin Dailey: Kids can enjoy a fun “make and take” art project centered around archaeology! 🎨
  • Basket Making with Glenn Rikard: Learn the traditional art of basket weaving! 🧺

This event is FREE and designed to be fun for the whole family! Facilitated by Florence Arts and Museums along with dedicated volunteers from the Archaeology at Pope’s Tavern project, Archaeology Day promises a day full of learning and discovery.
