Beseda s Tomášem Šebkem: Jako chirurg organizace Lékaři bez hranic
Haiti. Afghanistan. South Sudan. Yemen—places scarred by war, poverty, and natural disasters, where even the most basic necessities are often lacking, and yet decisions about human lives are made there every day.
Tomáš Šebek has worked there repeatedly. As a surgeon for Doctors Without Borders, he worked under conditions that most of us can hardly imagine—without security, without support, under pressure that cannot simply be “turned off.”
What drives a person to go where others are fleeing? And what do they bring back from these experiences?
Tomáš Šebek, a surgeon, author of several successful non-fiction books about his missions, and founder of the nonprofit organization Minister of Health, first became involved in humanitarian aid following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He described his experiences in the book Mission Haiti, followed by Mission Afghanistan: A Czech Surgeon in the Land of Dragon Hunters, African Winter, and The Sky Over Yemen. In his latest book, Objective Findings: My Toughest Mission, he also reflects on his own life journey and the decisions that fundamentally shaped it—from childhood to a change in both his professional and personal direction.
