Born in Miami during World War II and raised in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Chris's journey as a musician began in childhood. With his uncle teaching him the basics on his mother's ukulele, Chris quickly realized that mastering just a few chords could unlock a world of musical possibilities.

His love for acoustic music, especially the blues, ignited when he heard Lightnin' Hopkins, whose finger-picking style significantly influenced Smither’s own technique. In his early twenties, he journeyed to Boston, encouraged by folk legend Eric von Schmidt, where he immersed himself in the rich acoustic scene.
