CLEOPATRA: FROM EGYPTIAN QUEEN TO GLOBAL ICON

About the event

Join us for an enlightening 5-day course from Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, available in-person, livestreamed, and recorded for later viewing! 🌍✨

Course Director: Prof. Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones (Cardiff University)

For two millennia, perceptions of Cleopatra, the final ruler of pharaonic Egypt, have been shaped by Western imagination and culture. This engaging course delves into how our understanding of Cleopatra is refracted through historical and cultural lenses rather than the reality of the Egyptian queen herself.

Explore various representations of Cleopatra in Egyptology, history, classics, theatre, literature, film, and art history. This course will examine how depictions of the queen have evolved to meet specific political needs and how concepts of ancient Egypt, alongside Egyptomania, have transformed over ages, mirroring societal changes.

Special Highlight: In-person attendees will enjoy an exclusive visit to London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for a behind-the-scenes look at archives that spotlight Globe productions of the classic tragedy, Antony and Cleopatra. 🎭📜
