The Design Museum is thrilled to unveil its second exhibition dedicated to Slovak design, titled dizajn.sk. This exhibition showcases a curated selection of iconic and unique works representing Slovak design from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily sourced from the collections of the Slovak Design Museum.
The exhibition weaves together the narratives of Slovak design through various pieces, shedding light on the creative processes and innovative ideas of the designers against the backdrop of their eras. A standout feature is an exhibition system crafted from upcycled lightboxes, which literally and figuratively illuminate these remarkable designs.
"Slovak design carries a vibrant history that continually surprises with forgotten prototypes, artisanal poster designs, and sketches of unrealized products. Contemporary Slovak design boldly charts new paths, reflecting societal issues while embracing technological innovation and creative experimentation," shares Maroš Schmidt, director of the Slovak Design Center.
Design is a living entity, perpetually evolving and transforming. A unique trait of this exhibition is its dynamic nature, enabling the continuous display of the latest acquisitions and prominent works that have made waves at the National Design Award. This adaptability allows for the acknowledgment of milestones of key figures in Slovak design throughout the space.
"Investing in design equates to investing in our cultural heritage and shaping a creative future that significantly impacts society. Design is intricately woven into our daily lives, influencing how we live, work, and feel. We aim for the dizajn.sk exhibition to not only offer a glimpse into the history but also inspire the notion that Slovak design can harmonize beauty with functionality," emphasizes Anna Macaláková, director of J&T Banka in Slovakia.
"The essence of Slovak design is defined by countless 'small' stories—ideas, experiments, and the varied experiences of creators and consumers alike. These stories intertwine with the major narratives of societal rhythms and space energy. Our exhibition invites you to explore and embrace these tales, believing that the history and future of design are interconnected," highlights Mgr. Silvia Seneši Lutherová, PhD., Deputy Director of the Slovak Design Centre for Professional Affairs.
In collaboration with the Slovak Design Centre's departments, the exhibition comes alive through guided tours, discussions with designers and theorists, and a suite of thematically rich events catering to a diverse audience. Explore additional resources in the Design Reading Room and the Loma Materials Library to gain further insights and context for the exhibition.
