Om evenemanget
Discover the only permanent exhibition in Europe dedicated to Medieval Nubian paintings from the Nile River Valley, situated south of the First Cataract. Faras Gallery houses over 60 stunning paintings from the 8th to 14th centuries, originally from the cathedral in the historic city of Faras, part of the ancient kingdom of Nobadia (modern-day Sudan).
Nobadian rulers embraced Christianity around 548 AD, influenced by missionaries from Constantinople. The first cathedral was built in the 7th century, at a site pivotal to the rich history discovered by Polish archaeologists during the Nubia Campaign—a critical mission aimed at preserving ancient heritage threatened by the Aswan High Dam's construction.
Marvel at the meticulously crafted paintings adorning the plaster walls of the cathedral, displayed alongside architectural elements and artifacts from Faras. The gallery features local clergymen's epitaphs and exquisite ceramic pottery, showcasing the craftsmanship of the historic era.
Upon entering, you'll find artefacts from the original church, dating back to the early 7th century, alongside a scale model of the cathedral, offering insights into the architecture and spatial arrangement of the paintings.
Additionally, immerse yourself in the FARAS 3D Project, featuring a digital reconstruction of the cathedral. The gallery also presents films on Kazimierz Michałowski, the visionary archaeologist behind the Faras Gallery, and provides intriguing insights into Nubia’s cathedral, wall paintings, and the iconic excavation works conducted in Faras.
