Unearth the Hidden History Beneath Kraków!
Step into the fascinating world beneath the bustling streets of Kraków between the iconic Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and Saint Mary’s Church. Just a few meters down lies the Rynek Podziemny, an intriguing Underground Market revealing the city’s rich past. 🏛️
Discovered by archaeologists from 2005 to 2010, this medieval gem narrates the evolution of Kraków's Main Market Square, first established in 1257. Before its creation, the area served as a 10th-century cemetery and later as an open settlement for craftsmen, tragically destroyed by Mongol invaders in 1241. The ruins from this period lie on display, bringing history to life! 🏺
The exhibition highlights essential elements of Kraków’s urban landscape and trade activities throughout the ages. Among the most remarkable artifacts are:
- A silver denarius minted by Władysław the Elbow-high, showcasing St. Stanislaus (14th century) 💰
- A 14th-century silk purse
- A lead loaf weighing nearly 700 kg, marked with intriguing inscriptions 🪙
- A bone knife handle intricately carved in human form, dating back to the 14th century
- A rare 12th-century Armenian coin
- An 11th-century Byzantine pendant and cross, discovered in a grave from Kraków's ancient cemetery
- A decorative 14th-century badge featuring an image of the legendary Medusa, once affixed to clothing or headwear 🎭
