About the event

Join us for a vital conversation on climate strategy at the Metacrisis Salon #10!

For decades, our approach to climate action has focused on reducing emissions and adapting to impacts. While these remain critical, emerging science highlights a pressing challenge: the destabilization of essential Earth systems, including glaciers, ocean currents, and natural greenhouse gas stores. 🌊🌡️

What if our climate strategy needs a third pillar alongside mitigation and adaptation? Enter climate stabilization: the research and responsible monitoring of how to understand and mitigate Earth system destabilization risks.

In this session, we’ll address a provocative question: How can we manage climate risk in a world where merely cutting emissions may not suffice to ensure a safe and stable planet? We’ll delve into cutting-edge research on ice-sheet instability, methane feedbacks, and other critical risks. 🧊

Our special guest, Kelly Erhart, Director at Outlier Projects, brings expertise in climate philanthropy focused on frontier research aimed at predicting and preventing catastrophic risks to our Earth systems. Kelly collaborates with researchers exploring emerging pathways for climate stabilization—covering everything from glacier and sea-level risks to superpollutants. 🌱

This isn’t about abandoning decarbonization or pursuing quick techno-fixes. Instead, we’re here to discuss whether broadening our toolkit is essential in this era of climate overshoot, and how we can do so responsibly.

Prepare for a serious dialogue on how our climate strategy needs to evolve, enhancing visibility around risks while supporting efforts for a safer, stable climate. 🤝
