🌊 IMT Gallery Unveils Sheer Presence: While They Are Here...

IMT Gallery is proud to showcase a remarkable solo exhibition featuring the multimedia artist Maggie Roberts. This compelling collection delves into the concept of presence as a transformative force, utilizing a diverse range of mediums including watercolour paintings, digital collage, textiles, and video.

In a world marked by ecological collapse and the turmoil of uncertainty, Sheer Presence serves as a cosmopolitical manifestation tool, urging us to stay awake, be intentional, and remain attuned to the unseen forces that shape our collective reality. 🎨✨

Inspired by Blaise Agüera y Arcas’ thought-provoking book What Is Life? Evolution as Computation (MIT Press, 2025), Roberts portrays presence as the disruptive influence of another entity—often animal or virtual—on our human order. Citing the 8th-century Tibetan Buddhist Tattvasangraha text, she emphasizes that the ability to influence and reshape one’s environment is fundamental to existence, enhancing perceptions and experiences of reality.

At the core of the exhibition is an ancient manifestation grid, activated through six thematic “nodes”: ancestors><manifesting change. Each node addresses the feelings of disconnection, fragmentation, distraction, and destabilization prevalent in today’s world, while providing pathways toward healing, imagination, and renewal. 🌌💫

Visitors are invited to traverse the Lines of Intention across this geometric landscape—a multidimensional map designed to reconnect with deep time, invisible agents, and ancestral wisdom. The sacred geometry underlying manifestation practices is believed to align personal intentions with universal energies. At the heart of this journey is the octopus, which represents Roberts’ Avatar of Manifestation, embodying fluidity, adaptability, and authentic self. 🐙

Throughout the exhibition, crystals and hagstones—naturally formed stones shaped by ocean currents over millennia—act as portals to hidden truths. Linked to folklore and protection, these hagstones amplify the show’s resonance with multidimensional narratives, fostering the imagination’s power to effect change.

About Maggie Roberts

💼 Maggie Roberts has continually pushed the boundaries of human and machine vision throughout her career. As a solo artist and co-founder of the collaborative group 0rphan Drift, she has embraced ecological issues and the interconnectedness of humans, technology, and the broader biosphere. With works exhibited globally for over three decades, her recent projects include If AI Were Cephalopod and the 9 Brains initiative.

Roberts also shares her expertise by teaching Fine Art Critical Studies at Central St Martins, UAL, and lectures at various UK art institutions. Her works have been featured in notable exhibitions, such as Still I Rise: Gender, Feminisms and Resistance and Matter Fictions.
