The story follows Harold Hill, a fast-talking salesman who tries to con the townsfolk of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band. Despite his lack of musical knowledge, Hill’s plans go awry when he falls for the town librarian, Marian, who inspires him to become a better man by the show's end.
