Om evenemanget

Embark on a captivating musical journey with OKI (Oki Kano), who after years of being distanced from his Ainu indigenous heritage, found a profound connection upon returning to Hokkaido. His adventure began in the 1980s when he moved to New York, igniting a quest for belonging. Inspired by his roots, Oki taught himself to master the tonkori, a traditional five-stringed lute emblematic of Ainu culture, marking the beginning of a mesmerizing musical evolution.

Experience the harmonious blend of indigenous Ainu melodies and diverse global influences in his enchanting tracks. One listen to "Yaykatekar Dub (Love Dub)" unveils the brilliance of this fusion. OKI's performances, whether live or recorded, encapsulate the timeless essence of Ainu music, languages, and traditions, making them vibrant and relevant in today's world.

His acclaimed album, Tonkori in the Moonlight (2022), has garnered praise from international media, including The Guardian, Mojo, The Wire, and The Quietus, showcasing the evocative power of the tonkori. With a rich lineage—being the son of the esteemed Ainu wood sculptor Bikki Sunazawa—Oki weaves his heritage into his work, often collaborating with Ainu elder singer Umeko Ando. His music embodies an intergenerational magic, infused with the heartfelt essence of languages and knowledge that he lovingly embraces and wishes to share.

In OKI’s intricate and stunning compositions, the once-suppressed Ainu culture engages in a beautiful dialogue with a spectrum of global traditions from dub to funk. This celebration of cultural exchange ensures that Ainu wisdom and traditions reclaim their space, forever vibrant and alive. 🎵✨
