Temperament, fights, washing machines, arguments, breakups, and reconciliations—all this in a famous classic comedy from sunny Italy.

Carlo Goldoni wrote one of his most successful comedies, La baruffe chiozotte (The Quarrel in the Lagoon), in 1762. In his Memoirs, he notes about its creation: "In my youth, I lived for some time in Chioggia as a coadjutor chancellor. I had plenty to do with the numerous restless population of fishermen, sailors, and women who had no other gathering place than the street. I became familiar with their customs, their peculiar dialect or jargon, and I got to know their cheerful disposition and their cunning. So I was able to portray them as they really are." This rewarding comedy, full of the temperament, joys, and worries of ordinary people from a fishing village, enjoyed considerable success on Czech stages: for example, in the 1960s, it was staged by the National Theater in Prague with Ladislav Pešek, and twenty years ago, it was staged with Viktor Preiss and Petr Kostka at the Vinohrady Theater in Prague.
