About the event

The Winternitz Villa invites you to another lecture by curator and architectural historian Adam Štěch. Come immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Japanese architecture, which underwent a radical transformation in the postwar period. The lecture will guide you through the story of the evolution of bold experiments and adaptations to the dramatic changes in Japanese society between 1945 and 1982.

During the lecture, you will learn how a young generation of architects transformed European modernist influences into a unique language suited to Japan’s densely populated cities. Adam Štěch will present his own photographic research, which maps the diverse trends of the local culture—from iconic projects by visionaries such as Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa, and Kazuo Shinohara, to previously unknown and unorthodox examples of modern architecture.

The lecture will touch on key movements such as Modernism, Brutalism, and the specifically Japanese Metabolism, which helped transform traditional Japan into one of the most modern societies in the world. Period furniture and product design, which is an integral part of the exhibition, will also be covered.

Bonus for visitors: As part of the lecture, you will also have the opportunity to visit the exhibition itself and view the photographs and design pieces on display with your own eyes.

Entry to the villa will be permitted 30 minutes before the event begins.
