🎵 Tunes in the Old Town – Sounds of Old Town
Conducted in English | Stockholm's Gamla Stan
Step into the heart of Stockholm's historic Old Town for an enchanting evening where music, history, and culture intertwine. The Nobel Prize Museum, Medieval Museum, and Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral) join forces to present "Tunes in the Old Town" — a multi-venue journey through centuries of sound and story.
A single combined ticket unlocks a guided museum tour, a captivating walking tour, and a live organ concert in one of Sweden's most magnificent medieval settings.
🏛️ Nobel Prize Museum: Music as Motivation
What did Nobel Prize-winning poet Louise Glück discover in the music of composer Gustav Mahler that sparked her celebrated poetry collection Averno? This guided tour explores the origins of the Nobel Prize and illuminates the profound role music has played in the lives and creative processes of Nobel Laureates throughout history.
🏰 Medieval Museum: Time to Play! Music in Medieval Stockholm
What did Stockholm sound like in the Middle Ages? Bone flutes, jaw harps, and ocarinas filled the city's streets as performers and jesters entertained the townspeople. Music served many of the same purposes then as it does today — offering comfort, joy, storytelling, and ceremonial significance within church rituals. This walking tour brings to life the sounds that once echoed through medieval streets, squares, and sacred spaces.
⚠️ Please note: accessibility is limited due to inclines and cobblestone streets.
⛪ Stockholm Cathedral: Bach goes…
The evening reaches its crescendo inside the breathtaking Storkyrkan, over 700 years old, with a performance from the cathedral's concert series "Bach goes…" The timeless compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach are reinterpreted by contemporary musicians on the church's Marcussen organ from 1960. Flanking the grand organ is the ornate organ loft, featuring a balustrade and façade crafted in 1787 by architect Erik Palmstedt.
Before the concert begins, you are welcome to explore the cathedral at your own pace — something that normally requires a separate entrance ticket.
