The Evolution of the Museum of Human Disease: Preserving the Past, Educating the Future

Established during the early development of the University of New South Wales Faculty of Medicine, the museum began as a pathology teaching collection for medical students. At a time before modern medical imaging, preserved specimens played a central role in helping doctors connect observable symptoms at the bedside with structural changes inside the body revealed at autopsy. The museum reflects a broader tradition of pathology collections that functioned as three-dimensional learning libraries for medical education.Over time, the museum evolved beyond its original role in training doctors to become a significant educational resource for schools and the wider community. The presentation will examine how the collection has been sustained through careful stewardship, the importance of donation and ethical responsibility in caring for human tissue, and how the museum now focuses on prevention through education. Through health awareness initiatives and public programs, it continues to promote informed understanding of disease and the value of health literacy.
