Although most people associate Dan Bárta primarily with music and his singing career, he has long been a dedicated expert on dragonflies and is one of the Czech Republic’s leading odonatologists.
As part of the Pluto – Science in the South program, he will join entomologist and dragonfly conservationist Aleš Dolný to present a lecture titled “The Dragonfly as an Advance Scout,” focusing on the importance of these insects as sensitive bioindicators of the state of the landscape. The event will take place on June 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Komorni Club in Hrabůvka.
Dragonflies are creatures that first appeared on Earth 300 million years ago and possess a number of unique characteristics. Both speakers will explain why they are interesting and important to us and to nature conservation.
Dragonflies (Odonata) are considered excellent bioindicators of environmental quality, particularly the stability and purity of aquatic ecosystems. Since their life cycle is closely linked to water (the larvae live in water for several years), they are highly sensitive to environmental changes such as pollution, eutrophication (excess nutrients), or changes in the structure of riparian vegetation.
