Take a guided tour of one of the most significant functionalist buildings of the First Republic, designed by architects Karel Janů and Jiří Štursa.
The largest villa in Bohemia was built in 1938–1939 for Josef Volman, owner of the Čelákovice factory, and shows how its creators, representatives of scientific, left-wing functionalism, were well acquainted with current European trends and were able to incorporate them into an exceptional building.
You will learn about the dramatic fate of the house, which was resurrected from a completely dilapidated state to its current form. Art historian Markéta Čejková's commentary will focus on the essence of functionalism and its typical elements, which you will see for yourself in the villa. What was so appealing about it? And what were its weaknesses? Markéta will present interesting comparisons with private villas and apartments built in the 1920s and 1930s.
