When the surrender came...we were free: Luminary and Freedom Stories
Join us for a poignant evening at Bennett Place as we commemorate the profound significance of Civil War surrenders. Harriet Ann Daves once shared the moment her grandfather told her mother, "Well, you are as free as I am." Yet, for the 331,059 enslaved individuals, the path to freedom was fraught with challenges.
Discover the myriad ways freedom manifested during this era—some ventured perilously towards Union lines, while others followed Sherman's army or awaited the promises of emancipation in situ. Despite deception from enslavers and Forced relocations, the defeat of the Confederate military marked a critical juncture for freedom across the nation.
✨ Event Highlights: Reflect on the end of the Civil War as we honor the stories of those who fought for freedom. Walk among 3,310 luminaries—each representing 1,000 enslaved people in North Carolina—while historians share personal narratives illuminating paths to freedom and life post-slavery.
