Annie Ernaux: Simple Passion & A Man's Place

Sobre el evento

Join us for an engaging discussion at the Prague In-Person Book Club! We'll explore two powerful novellas by the acclaimed Annie Ernaux:

Simple Passion

In her minimalist and poignant style, Annie Ernaux delves into the complexities of the human heart in the throes of an all-consuming passion. Following the journey of an unnamed narrator, we witness the emotional and physical landscape of her two-year relationship with a married foreigner, where every encounter either brings her closer to her beloved or fades into her indifference. With clarity and bravery, Ernaux seeks the truth behind a life lived solely for another and uncovers her own identity in the aftermath.

A Man's Place

A New York Times Notable Book
This novella reflects on Ernaux's father, who passed away just two months after she completed her teaching certification. Having been undervalued throughout his life, he grew into a practical and reserved man, displaying little affection. Through her observational lens, Ernaux reveals the shame that haunted her father and scrutinizes the value he placed on manners and language, which felt foreign to him as he supported his family through a grocery store and cafe in rural France. As the narrative unfolds, Ernaux transforms into the astute observer we recognize today, while her father's character matures with a hesitant appreciation for life and for the daughter he admires.
