Celebrating Nina Salaman's Life and Poetry

Sobre el evento

Join us for a heartfelt afternoon dedicated to the life and work of Nina Salaman (1877–1925), a distinguished poet, translator, and a trailblazer in the British Jewish community who passionately advocated for women's suffrage.

During this reflective event, you'll enjoy:

  • 🍵 Refreshments
  • 📖 Readings of her original poems alongside her exquisite Hebrew translations
  • 🕊️ A chance to discover more about her impactful legacy
  • 🏺 An opportunity to visit her resting place

Nina Salaman is celebrated for her groundbreaking translations of the medieval Hebrew poet Yehudah HaLevi, published in 1924 after a decade of dedication. Her own poetry, including The Voices of the Rivers, significantly contributed to Jewish cultural life in early 20th century Britain, with her writings featured in The Jewish Chronicle and other esteemed publications.

Married to Redcliffe Salaman, a renowned scientist known for developing blight-free potatoes, Nina was an integral part of the Cambridge Hebrew Congregation, where she made history as the first woman to deliver a sermon in an Orthodox synagogue in the UK.

This gathering, hosted at the Willesden Jewish Cemetery’s House of Life, aims to bring Jewish history to life and honor the memories of all our residents. We are excited to connect poetry, place, and memory in this unique historic setting.
