Community Carbonates: Capturing Carbon Collectively

Join us at the Climate Imaginarium to meet the Community Carbonates team and experience a demo of their innovative flowstone technology!

Community Carbonates is pioneering a way to capture CO₂ in our communities through engineered flowstones, a nature-inspired, distributive technology. Built on existing infrastructure and designed for indoor use, flowstones transform ambient CO₂ into mineral carbonates used as construction materials. In addition to carbon capture, this technology improves air quality, reduces energy usage, and boosts productivity—making it a meaningful climate solution accessible to everyday communities.

This initiative is part of the Global Impact Lab at the Columbia Climate School.

About the Climate Imaginarium 🌱

The Climate Imaginarium serves as a center for climate, community, and culture in New York City. Located on Governors Island, it activates a cultural destination at the heart of NYC’s growing green economy, where artists, scientists, advocates, and storytellers unite to reimagine a more resilient future.

Admission 💰

A suggested donation of $10 is appreciated to support our community space at the Climate Imaginarium, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Getting to the Climate Imaginarium ⛵

For the weekend ferry schedule to Governors Island, check here. Ferries run every 15 minutes from:

• Lower Manhattan (10 South Street)
• Brooklyn Bridge Park (Pier 6)
• Red Hook/Atlantic Basin

Please arrive 15 minutes before your departure time with your ticket ready. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the terminal or online for $5 round trip. The ferry is free for adults over 65, children 12 and under, and Climate Imaginarium summer volunteers. All passengers ride free before 11 AM on weekends.

Governors Island is also accessible via NYC Ferry, with tickets priced at $4.50 each way. Upon arrival, you will get out at either Soissons Landing (from Manhattan) or Yankee Pier (from Brooklyn).

The Climate Imaginarium is located in Building 406A, in the middle of Colonels Row. Look for the visible sign outside the doorway. Our address is 406A Comfort Road.
