Cowboy for a Day
Step into the heart of Oklahoma’s living cowboy culture with a behind-the-scenes day at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, the world’s largest live cattle market. Here, cowboys, ranchers, and auctioneers uphold traditions that have lasted over a century. Discover how cattle trading operates today, listen to authentic ranch stories, and experience a side of Oklahoma City that most visitors never encounter.
After the tour, enjoy a meal at the historical Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, an Oklahoma City institution since 1910. Treat yourself to lamb fries — a genuine cowboy delicacy — and savor a classic steak lunch, surrounded by a dining room brimming with history and cowboy lore.
The afternoon concludes at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, where stories from earlier come to life through art, artifacts, rodeo legends, and Western films. Explore how frontier settlers to modern cowboys have shaped the American West through this iconic museum. By the end of the day, you won’t just learn about cowboy culture — you’ll have truly lived it!
