Munising in Black/White: The Photos of Mary Jayne Hallifax

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is excited to present an inspiring photographic exhibition featuring the remarkable work of Mary Jayne Hallifax, one of the Upper Peninsula’s most prolific photographers.

Exhibition Details:

🖼️ Munising in Black & White: The Photographs of Mary Jayne Hallifax showcases 60 stunning photographs that highlight community life during the 1950s and 1960s.

📅 This exhibition will be on display from July 9 through October 3 at the Beaumier Center’s Gallery, located in 223 Harden Hall on the Northern Michigan University campus.

⏰ Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 12 PM to 4 PM.

Mary Jayne (Shampine) Hallifax was a cherished lifelong resident of Munising, known for her passion for capturing candid moments in the community. From school activities to street scenes, her legacy lives on through these stunning images.

📖 After studying photography while working on her high school yearbook in 1946, she dedicated her life to the craft, eventually becoming the most sought-after commercial photographer in Munising.

👰🏽 Over the years, she beautifully documented community events, families, and even worked with the State Police crime lab. Mary Jayne captured the visits of seven Michigan governors to Munising during her prolific career. Up until her 95th birthday, she shared her experiences through a weekly column, touching the hearts of many readers.
