Presence at the Threshold: Dialogical Leadership in the Age of AI

AI is reshaping how we make decisions, collaborate, and sense the world around us. Most leadership frameworks respond by adding new competencies to existing models — AI literacy, ethical guidelines, data fluency. These matter. But they don't reach the deeper challenge: learning to stay present, responsive, and genuinely curious in conditions of accelerating complexity and uncertainty.
Bruce Alderman directs the Blue Sky Leaders certificate program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where leadership development begins with the cultivation of embodied presence, deepened perception, and the capacity to hold creative tension without collapsing into premature certainty. Drawing on contemplative practice, integral and developmental psychology, and participatory philosophy, BSL develops leaders who can meet disruption with discernment rather than reactivity.
Central to this work is a distinctive approach to human-AI collaboration — one that treats AI partnership as a site of genuine inquiry and mutual thinking, rather than mere optimization. In BSL, participants learn to engage AI dialogically: as a practice of attentional refinement, ethical reflection, and creative co-exploration.
