🎼 About the Performance:
In their third season, Relic quickly earned a reputation for cutting-edge performances of both renowned and lesser-known Baroque masterpieces. This concert offers a unique program titled “The Blood of the Rose”, showcasing the first opera ever performed in the Americas: Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco’s La Púrpura de la Rosa.
The piece, featuring a libretto by the celebrated Spanish poet Pedro Calderón de la Barca, tells the poignant love story of Venus and Adonis, infused with the rich traditions of Baroque music from 1700s Peru. The program is divided into five musical chapters, interspersed with elegant spoken excerpts from Calderón's lush libretto, portraying the romance's rise, Mars's vicious disruptions, and the couple's ultimate tragic fate.
