Stewarding Just Transitions in Mining: A Global South Perspective
🌍 Join us for an engaging discussion that unites responsible investors in the extractive sector, including asset owners, asset managers, investment and commercial banks, index providers, emerging market companies, and data providers. This event explores the transboundary dimensions of the Just Transition in the extraction and trade of critical minerals essential for clean technologies.
🔋 The demand for critical minerals is skyrocketing, with projections indicating a fivefold increase in lithium demand by 2040 and significant rises in graphite, nickel, cobalt, and rare earths. This surge is largely driven by advancements in electric mobility, batteries, and clean-energy solutions.
💔 However, mining projects often disrupt environmentally sensitive areas and traditional Indigenous territories, leading to substantial financial risks due to inadequate consultation and inequitable benefit-sharing. Issues like protests, project delays, and catastrophic tailings dam failures can result in enormous liabilities.
