Summer of Poetry Chapter 1: Reading a Poem
Dear members,
Join NYC Women in STEM for a Summer of Poetry, a delightful series dedicated to reading and discussing poetry. If you are already familiar with our format, feel free to scroll to the reading selection below.
Why Poetry? 📖
Rebecca Elson, James Clerk Maxwell, and Ada Lovelace brilliantly explored the essence of being a scientist and a human through the lens of poetry. Immunologist Miroslav Holub noted the "uneasy relationship" between science and poetry, highlighting the suspicion many scientists feel toward poets. It raises a question: how many women in STEM might be concealing their poetic passions beneath their tools and equipment?
These events aim to open our minds to new ways of understanding. If you've always wanted to delve into poetry but didn't know where to start, or found it challenging to find motivation, this gathering is just for you!
What's On Our Reading List? 📚
Every two weeks, we will explore and discuss a selection of 3-5 poems from both classical and contemporary authors. We will closely follow An Introduction to Poetry by X. J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia, a treasured resource for poetry enthusiasts.
While owning the textbook isn't a requirement, we encourage those new to poetry to consider acquiring a copy for a deeper engagement as we progress through the chapters.
You can find used copies online at reasonable prices—try AbeBooks or ThriftBooks. I personally found a twelfth edition for just $5!
Where? 🌳
We gather biweekly at Central Park, specifically at the corner of 103rd St and Central Park West, until summer comes to a close. Should the weather turn unfavorable, stay tuned for updates via email.
Who May Join? 🌈
This group warmly welcomes all women, no matter their professional background or prior knowledge of poetry.
Anything Else? 🤔
We look forward to diving deep into the world of poetry with you! Don't miss out on this chance to experience the beauty of words together.
