The Schoolhouse presents: A Page of Madness
A Page of Madness(狂った一頁、1926)
Director: Teinosuke Kinugasa | Story: Yasunari Kawabata
A Page of Madness is a Japanese silent film that operates without intertitles, relying on visual imagery and montage to convey its narrative. Often cited in relation to German Expressionist cinema, the film was a notable departure from mainstream Japanese filmmaking of its era.
A former sailor takes a job as a janitor at an insane asylum in order to watch over his wife, who has been institutionalized. He attempts to help her escape, hoping to preserve both her sanity and the upcoming marriage of their daughter. However, the chaotic environment of the asylum-particularly the presence of a violent male inmate-complicates his efforts and draws him further into a disoriented mental state in which reality and hallucination become difficult to separate.
Nonloc is Mark Dwinell, founder of Brooklyn’s Forma (Kranky, Spectrum Spools) and principal resident of The Schoolhouse. Utilizing an array of synthesizers and sound processors he will perform a live electronic soundtrack to accompany the film.
This event is free, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
