Wisbech Castle once served as a state prison for Catholics during the reigns of Elizabeth, James I, and Charles I, and for Protestants during Queen Mary's reign. It was here that many executions were carried out, and it’s rumored that the Gunpowder Plot was conceived within these walls!

Though the castle fell into disrepair in the 1600s, it was revitalized in the late 1700s by the same family that owned it for over a century.
