Battle of Cable Street - 90th anniversary
Unite the union is hosting a major event this Autumn to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. All over the country in 1936, Mosley's British Union of Fascists were chased off the streets by a strong, organised working class who knew that the politics of hate and division offers no solutions. The Battle of Cable Street on 4 October 1936 was by far the country’s biggest mobilisation against fascism. Mosley’s antisemitism had become increasingly poisonous and he planned a provocative march through the Jewish community of East London, followed by four huge public meetings. The East London Jewish community and a coalition of the organised working class resisted the fascist incursion, with over a hundred thousand taking to the streets under the slogan “They Shall Not Pass”. The 5,000 fascists were unable to march, and the police redirected them – a massive humiliation for Mosley. What are we planning?MARCH & RALLYUnite will be supporting the major march and rally on the anniversary day.
