In partnership with the American Cinematheque, ‘Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair’ highlights some of the most profound films from around the world, delving into the darker aspects of humanity and poignant moments in history.

This fifth annual edition in June 2026 spans nearly 100 theaters across the U.S., Canada, U.K., and South and Central America, featuring uniquely curated lineups of uncompromising films marked by harsh truths and deep empathy.

Film Synopsis: In the upscale Toronto strip club Exotica, dancer Christina is visited nightly by the obsessive Francis, a depressed tax auditor. Her ex-boyfriend, the club's MC, Eric, still carries a torch for her while grappling with his own relationship troubles with the club’s female owner. Complicating matters is Thomas, a mysterious pet-shop owner, who is about to become intertwined in their lives.
