Lago Albano to Monte Cavo
Lago Albano to Monte Cavo Saturday June 13, 2026
The Hike
This is one of our most ambitious free hikes yet and it is absolutely worth it. We are walking from Lago Albano up to Monte Cavo with panoramic views of two volcanic lakes waiting for us at the top. The full route is approximately 18km but this hike is designed with options so everyone can participate at their own level.
Getting There
🚆 Train from Roma Termini at 9:00am, train 20237 to Albano Laziale station. Please purchase your ticket in advance. It is only €2 each way. For the return journey we will buy tickets on the day in case we run a little later than expected.
The Route
📍 From Albano Laziale station we walk 15 minutes to the trailhead. There is a porchetta restaurant at the start that has kindly agreed to let us use their bathroom before we begin. You can also grab a coffee or water here before we set off.
🌲 Once we begin we follow a shaded path around the beautiful Lago Albano for approximately 1.5 hours. This section is fairly flat and peaceful. Please note the path has some muddy and dusty sections as it runs through woodland so wear appropriate footwear and expect some bugs along the way!
🍽️ We emerge onto a road and stop at Trattoria La Baita for a lunch break. This is where the group splits into two:
Group 1 stays at the trattoria to eat, rest and enjoy the surroundings before the walk back.
Group 2 grabs a sandwich to go and continues up Monte Cavo — approximately 1 hour uphill on a proper road to the summit.
🏔️ At the top of Monte Cavo you will be rewarded with breathtaking views over both Lago Albano and Lago di Nemi. We will eat our sandwiches at the summit and take it all in before beginning the 35 minute descent back down to reunite with Group 1.
🔄 After a final bathroom and water break the full group walks back around Lago Albano to the train station, which takes just over an hour.
Difficulty
🥾 Beginner to moderate. The first section around the lake is flat and shaded making it very accessible. The Monte Cavo climb is uphill but follows a real road with no technical terrain. Long but not brutal — the scenery makes every step worth it.
What to Bring
👟 Shoes with grip — the lakeside path has muddy sections so no flat shoes or sandals 🎒 A small backpack 💧 At least 1.5L of water 🧴 Sunscreen and insect repellent 🥪 Budget for a sandwich at La Baita for lunch 💶 Cash for your train ticket and any food or drinks along the way
Cost
This hike is completely free! The only costs are your train ticket (€2 each way) and any food or drinks on the day.
