Forty-five-year-old Ester’s life revolves entirely around caring for her son David, who has a severe intellectual disability. A trip to Italy to visit friends offers a welcome chance to escape her grueling routine, but even a change of scenery cannot alter the fact that life with David is far from easy. Ester impulsively decides to start up the old camper van that was meant to be a dedicated vacation home for her and her son, and transforms it into a vehicle of freedom. The journey through sunny Italy becomes healing for the pair. Ester rediscovers within herself, if only for a moment, the person who has the right not only to give love, but also to receive it. An intimate road movie that, after more than thirty years, brought a Czech feature film back to the screens of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, it touches with tenderness and unflinching openness on themes of the body and the soul, freedom and surrender, hope and helplessness.
