This book is the first comprehensive guide on how to effectively implement service design to enhance the quality of interactions between service providers and customers. You'll discover specific facilitation guidelines for running workshops, applying key service design methods, and successfully embedding service design within an organization.

How Does This Book Club Work?

We will tackle each book over 2-3 meetings, allowing us to work through the material in a sustainable and supportive manner for busy professionals.

Don’t worry if you haven’t read the previous chapters or only managed to skim through! The main goal is to learn from each other's experiences and explore how theory translates into practice.

We aim to make reading service design books enjoyable and accessible for everyone. While we want to foster accountability, we’re not here to add to your stress.

Who is This For?

Anyone interested in service design! Whether you're a seasoned service designer, looking to pivot into this field, or just curious about how service design principles can apply to your work, everyone is welcome.

Great discussions arise from diverse experiences and perspectives. Feeling shy about your limited service design background? Don’t be! The goal is to learn together.

What is Service Design?

Service design is an interdisciplinary practice that uses research to solve problems within a system or service, employing design thinking to address these issues. Service designers take a holistic view of the entire service ecosystem, incorporating the perspectives of employees, customers, and stakeholders to deliver cohesive solutions.

No matter your title, anyone can engage in service design work or benefit from learning about these concepts. Join us to learn more!

What Should I Expect?

Expect fun vibes and engaging discussions! We’ll share our thoughts on a few chapters, relate them to our professional experiences, and learn from each other along the way.

Rosenblum is a winery specializing in Zinfandels. We typically enjoy some drinks and small bites while discussing the book!

If something sparked your interest or raised a question during your reading, jot it down and bring it to our discussion! This conversation is what we want to make of it, and it helps me as the facilitator 😉.

How Do I Get There?

  • Ferry: For a scenic route to Jack London, take the ferry from San Francisco or Alameda to the Oakland Ferry Terminal, right in front of Rosenblum.
  • BART: Both the 12th St Station and Lake Merritt Station are within walking distance of Rosenblum.
  • Car: If driving, convenient parking is available at the garages at 101 Washington Street (over Yoshi's) or 98 Broadway (under Plank). Street parking is also an option.

How Will I Find the Group?

When you arrive at Rosenblum, look for an SDN sign at one of the outdoor tables, likely at the larger tables on either end. In case of loud noise or bad weather, we may move inside. If you can’t find us, email [email protected].

How Can I Stay In the Loop?

We’ll send out emails about the book club meetings and update the Service Design Network Slack and a new WhatsApp group. To be added, email us at [email protected].
