Alash: Tuvan Throat Singers

Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for producing multiple pitches simultaneously. This talented trio distinguishes themselves from earlier Tuvan throat singers by infusing modern influences into their traditional music. Expect complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms, while the overall sound remains distinctly Tuvan.

Trained in traditional Tuvan music from childhood, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College as Tuva began to embrace the West. They formed a traditional ensemble, earning multiple awards in international xöömei competitions. While honoring their roots, they also embraced new trends that blend seamlessly with their traditional sound.

Alash first toured the U.S. through the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts, and they've returned numerous times, captivating American audiences. The Washington Post described their performances as “utterly stunning,” leaving audience members in awe.

Their collaborative spirit shines as they join forces with diverse musicians, spanning genres from country to classical to jazz. Alash contributed to Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD, Jingle All the Way, and participated in innovative concert series and projects, including a unique “global jam band” for the video game The Pathless.

Beyond performances, Alash actively promotes cultural understanding through workshops in schools and universities, inspiring students to explore Tuvan music. One student exclaimed, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!”

• Bady-Dorzhu Ondar: Vocals, igil, guitar, bayan (accordion).
  Awards include Best soloist at the 2005 All-Russian Festival and Grand prize at the International Xöömei Symposium in 2008.
• Ayan-ool Sam: Vocals, doshpuluur, igil, xomus.
  Winner of the first prize at the International Xöömei Symposium in 2008.
• Ayan Shirizhik: Vocals, kengirge, shyngyrash, shoor, xomus.
  Distinguished Artist of Tuva, recognized in the 2009 and 2021 competitions.
• Sean Quirk: Manager, interpreter.
  A Fulbright fellow who studied music in Tuva, named Distinguished Artist of Tuva in 2008.
