About the Exhibition:
Created during a two-month residency at the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam, in collaboration with ZAM Magazine, Around Midnight marks a return to Ndzube's painting roots. He moves away from installations, building layers of brushstrokes that craft scenes filled with life and nostalgia.
Referencing icons of music such as Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba, alongside the evocative photography of Bob Gosani, the works resonate with rich cultural and political narratives, capturing a quiet tension between past and present, all set under glowing palettes and vast night skies.

Curator's Perspective:
Around Midnight embodies a moment of anticipation, where the narratives born from music come alive. In conversation with Chibuye, Ndzube described his work as a “messaging gift”, a narrative thread that connects past legacies to current realities. He revisits ancestral quests and shares stories from South Africa, intertwining the essence of Sophiatown and the vibrant nightlife within his artistic expression.

Stevenson Gallery, established in 2003, has gained renown for its support of artists who engage with identity and socio-political themes. The Amsterdam space serves as a platform for dialogue amongst artists from the African continent and its diaspora, fostering connections with global audiences through exhibitions and collaborations.
