August History Hour: Vanishing Stages: The Live-Music Venues That Made Athens

Join us for August's History Hour as we delve into the rich live-music history of Athens, Georgia! 🎤

While Athens is known for iconic bands like the B-52s and R.E.M., from 1915 to 1968, it hosted an impressive array of touring live music, featuring legends such as James Brown, Otis Redding, and Ray Charles.

Led by local music historian and author Chris Jones, this session will explore the venues that shaped Athens' music scene, focusing on those that have vanished or are at risk. From the beautiful Morton Theater and Georgian Hotel to the hidden stages of fraternity houses, country clubs, and roadhouses, we will uncover the stories behind these spaces.

In a segregated Athens, two distinct music towns emerged: Black Athens and White-Campus Athens. Hot Corner, with venues like the Morton Theater and Harlem Theater, became the heart of Black performance in the South, while UGA's campus hosted White music venues, including James Brown's pivotal 1962 performance at the KA House.
