Beyond the Line delves into a pivotal moment in Oleg Prokofiev's artistic journey, where the boundaries between drawing, painting, and sculpture blur through an adventurous examination of line, color, and space.

The exhibit emphasizes works developed after Prokofiev's transformative visit to the United States from 1977 to 1978, inspired by New York's towering skyline and vibrant energy. This encounter propelled him towards a groundbreaking series of drawings titled Stripes and introduced him to abstract art at the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, and Metropolitan Museum. Renowned artists like Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler fostered his newfound confidence in reduction, color, and clarity.

Prokofiev's return ignited a novel visual language that emphasized color as a dynamic structural force. Through contrasting bands and rhythmic intervals, his creations transcend traditional painting and drawing, captivating viewers with lines that operate both as gestures and architectural elements.

This exploration naturally transitioned into sculpture, with wood becoming Prokofiev's favored medium in the late 70s and early 80s. He envisioned sculpture not as a static entity but as a dance of movement, balance, and void. His works architect dialogues between weight and lightness, revealing empty space as crucial as the material itself.

At the core of his creations lies a profound poetic essence of abstraction. Echoing Paul Klee, Prokofiev aspired to create a universal visual language, positioning his sculptures as unique systems of rhythm, growth, and transformation. Open and unfinished, these forms engage viewers with an evolving presence as they navigate around them.

Beyond the Line showcases this vital shift in Prokofiev's practice, where line becomes structure, color embodies space, and sculpture emerges as a dynamic choreography. This exhibition celebrates Prokofiev's commitment to expanding the horizons of abstraction, transforming geometric precision into a lyrical, expressive, and profoundly human language.
