Bronze axe casting workshop

Info sull'evento

Join us for an immersive experience into the world of prehistoric craftsmanship! 🛠️ Discover how ancient Britons created metal tools over 4,000 years ago, beginning with copper and evolving to bronze which was stronger and easier to cast.

During this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Choose your axe: Select from different types of axes to cast, including the flanged axe, an iconic tool showcased in both artifacts and rock art at Stonehenge 🗿. You can also opt for the middle Bronze Age palstave axe, renowned for its unique design and historical significance.
  • Hands-on experience: Prepare your own mould and operate the leather bellows on a charcoal-fueled furnace to melt your bronze 🏺. You'll cast this liquid metal into your moulds, resulting in a replica Bronze Age axe that you can take home!
  • Personalize your creation: After casting, you can file off excess material, clean the axe's surfaces, and even decorate it with punches!
  • Learn about history: Enjoy a brief talk that provides context on the Bronze Age and the evolution of axe crafting.
