[Cultural Excursion] 'Dongdaemun, Seoul Fortress, and Cheonggyecheon Museum Walk'

Join us for an engaging exploration of Seoul's rich history with the Dongdaemun, Seoul Fortress, and Cheonggyecheon Museum Walk led by Matt VanVolkenburg!

🗓 Meet Up: Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (DDP) (동대문역사문화공원역, Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5).

As the weather heats up, now is the perfect time to discover lesser-known museums in the Dongdaemun area. We’ll kick off our journey at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and the Dongdaemun History Museum 1398, where cutting-edge architecture coexists with remnants of the historical Seoul fortress. Unearth layers of history, including sections of the Seoul City Wall and military facilities.

Next, we will delve into the Seoul City Wall Museum, exploring the fascinating narrative of the wall that encapsulated Hanyang, the Joseon Dynasty's capital. This museum sheds light on the wall's construction, the lives around it, and its colonial-era disappearance.

Continuing our adventure, we'll stop at the Baek Nam-jun Memorial House, celebrating the visionary video artist Nam June Paik. Nestled in a serene neighborhood, this space reveals the early influences of an artist who revolutionized contemporary art.

After a brief bus ride and a picturesque stroll along the Jeongneungcheon Stream, we’ll visit the recreated makeshift houses that once flanked Cheonggyecheon Stream and explore the Cheonggyecheon Museum. Discover the stream’s evolution from a hidden waterway to a restored urban gem, reflecting Seoul's urban transformation over the last century.
